Check Yourself

the only way to really check yourself for syphilis is to get tested.

If you’re sexually active, you should get a syphilis test every 6 months. If you notice any symptoms like a sore or rash, get tested right away. If you are HIV positive, you should be tested for syphilis every 3 months. Be sure to ask your doctor specifically for a “syphilis test.” Many men assume they are being tested for syphilis when they have other blood tests, but this is not always the case.

The most common test for syphilis is a simple blood test. A doctor can also diagnose syphilis if you have a sore or a rash. STD testing and treatment are free and confidential at all Los Angeles County STD clinics. Many other clinics also offer free or low cost syphilis tests.

If you have syphilis, tell your sex partner(s) that they may have it too and that they need to get tested. Don't have sex until both you and your partner(s) are cured, because you can get the disease again. If you have your partners’ email addresses, you can use inSPOTLA.org to tell them anonymously that they may have been exposed to an STD. Telling your partners is an effective way to protect yourself and your community from syphilis.
